Abstract: The fatigue properties of a 10mm Emulsified Bitumen Macadam wearing course have been evaluated using a three-point bending test at 10Hz and 10°C. The Macadam was prepared by two methods: in the laboratory using a roller-compactor and in a trial patch compacted with a vibro-tamper. The stiffness of the laboratory and trial specimens was monitored and was seen to continue to develop over a long period. Fatigue results obtained at the early stages and after full cure showed that the laboratory prepared Macadam underwent a significant improvement in behaviour measured against an equivalent hot mix, whereas the trial material that was exposed to the weather conditions exhibited inferior fatigue properties. Controlled strain and stress data expressed as cumulative dissipated energy have been shown to converge to a unique relationship for each mix and to rank the materials in order of fatigue performance.
