Abstract: This paper describes the use of the Transportek Wheel Tracking Test (TWTT) in the new South African Hot Mix Asphalt guidelines to evaluate the rutting resistance of mixes. Results from a validation study of the SA HMA guidelines used to evaluate the TWTT are presented, as is justification for modifying the criterion used to assess mixes. The test was also validated with field data from a test section that was showing signifi-cant early rutting. Slabs from rutted and non-rutted sections were tested in the TWTT and the results compared favourably with the observed field performance. The paper confirms that a wheel tracking test, in this case the TWTT, is currently the best, relatively affordable test to rank mixes in South Africa.
