Abstract: The tensile strength of asphalt mixture was determined in the uniaxial tensile test, the semi-circular bending tensile test, and the indirect tensile test. In the semi-circular bending tensile test, an un-notched specimen and a notched specimen were used. In addition to the experimental work, finite element calculations were performed. The experimental investigation was performed to investigate the dependence on the speci-men geometry and the testing variables deformation rate and temperature on the tensile strength. The finite element study was conducted to investigate the strain inhomogene-ity of the semi-circular bending test specimen. The purpose of the investigation is to gain confidence that the tensile strength can be obtained as a true material property, to characterise the resistance to crack-growth and fracture of asphalt mixture. It was found that the tensile strength in the different test methods is not greatly different. The finite element study has revealed that the state of stress of the semi-circular bending test specimen is suitable to determine the tensile strength.
