Abstract: This paper describes the use of a dynamic plasticity based constitutive model to repre-sent the response of gap-graded and continuously graded asphalt mixtures commonly used in the UK. The constitutive model is under development at Delft University of Technology, where it will be implemented in the finite element code, INSAP. The paper briefly describes the material response model and details the monotonic, uniaxial com-pression and tension testing at various temperatures and strain rates that is necessary to determine the basic model parameters. The test data has been used to determine mathe-matical functions for the compressive and tensile strengths of the asphalt mixtures as well as functions describing their hardening and softening behaviour. The model was then successfully used to simulate the compressive response of the asphalt mixtures.
