Abstract: Repair costs of steel reinforced concrete structures exponentially grow with the time elapsed from the onset of corrosion up to intervention; therefore, the planning of a monitoring system, able to reveal the corrosion risk of steel reinforcement embedded in concrete would be an essential issue. In particular, the free corrosion potential of steel reinforcement, whose change could indicate the onset of conditions favorable for corrosion initiation, can be easily monitored by embedding some electrodes in the concrete structure, either for measuring or simply as a reference. The suitable dislocation of these electrodes depends on the type and geometry of the concrete structure as well as on its exposure condition. The proposed system provides signals, revealed by means of the electrodes and sent to a peripheral device of remote reading, where the stored data are suitably analyzed and memorized and finally sent by modem to a monitoring station for their processing. This procedure has already been applied to some concrete structures that are continuously controlled from the same monitoring station. These preliminary experiences show the effectiveness of the arranged system.
