Abstract: A digital image analysis technique for crack monitoring using a standard web-camera has been designed for concrete dam applications. The technique allows for the measurement of suspected serious cracks, identified from inspections, trough a sequence of images captured at intervals. The displacements at the surface of the test piece are obtained by the use of second order area moments of discrete dots painted on the camera object. Results from field test at a concrete dam in Sweden are under way. Even though the results are not fully compiled yet, the study implies that the technique can be highly useful for hydropower concrete structure applications. Further practical adoption is necessary to speed up the process for routine application.
