Abstract: In this paper the effect of the aggregate content on drying shrinkage microcracking in cement-based composites is investigated.
Experiments were performed on cement-based composites containing spherical glass particles as aggregates.
It was found that the use of these model particles is an excellent tool to study the basic mechanisms of drying shrinkage microcracking in cement-based composites.
The microcracks were made visible by means of an impregnation technique in combination with optical microscopy.
Crack-patterns were quantified by using image analysis software.
The effect of aggregate size and quantity on the defined crack-parameters is reported in this paper.
Cracking was recorded on two stages of drying, which allowed to elucidate the long-term evolution of drying shrinkage microcracking.
