Abstract: The development of cracking in concrete structures leads to large permeability and consequently to durability problems. Controlling crack development and crack width in ordinary concrete has been a matter widely debated. Nevertheless, proposed measures seem either insufficient or impractical, as durability problems in concrete structures continue to prevail. In this paper, HPFRCC is presented as an emerging solution to structures prone to durability problems. Previous studies on HPFRCC with focus on durability are reviewed and their main findings summarized. In particular, the importance of restraining crack width is discussed from a viewpoint of durability design. The relationship between permeability and crack width is discussed as HPFRCC feature, and also the role of fiber reinforcement to prevent the cover to reinforcement from spalling. Finally further research needs on durability of the HPFRCC are identified.
