Abstract: The Jury for the 2002 Robert L'Hermite Medal was composed of Prof.
Arnon Bentur (Chairman of the RILEM Technical Advisory Committee), Prof.
Karen Scrivener (Expert appointed by the Bureau under the proposal of the TAC)and Prof.
Peter Bartos (Member-atLarge elected by the General Council).
The jury convened on May 23,2002 to examine the list of authors who met the criteria for the award:being under 40 years of age in 2002,and having either been published in a RILEM Journal during 2001.
The author selected was Prof.
Franz-Josef Ulm,from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA),in recognition of his work in the field of durability mechanics.
He has done pioneering work in integrating chemical and physical processes in advanced numerical models to predict the overall behaviour of concrete structures.
This approach has the potential to make a key to predictions and mitigation of premature structural deterioration induced by coupled thermomechanical problems in concrete structures.
During his tenure at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (1994-1998),Prof.
Ulm took part in several consulting missions for largescale bridge, tunnel and energy power plant projects in France on behalf of the French ministry of public works and Électricité de France (EDF).
Since 1997,he was involved in organizing and chairing one International Conference, two International Workshops, eight Symposia with twentytwo sessions on national and international conferences.
Since 1998,Prof.
Ulm edited and co-edited Workshop and Conference Proceedings, and topical issues of International Journals.
He is a member of several editorial boards, and reviewer of International Journals on Engineering Mechanics and Materials Science of concrete.
The award was presented to Prof.
Ulm on September 11, 2002 during the RILEM Week in Madrid.
At that time,Prof.
Ulm presented a lecture entitled ‘Chemo-Mechanics a review of evidence ’,which will be published in Materials and Structures .
