Abstract: Autogenous shrinkage can increase the risk of early age cracking.
An experimental device that allows the study of the behavior of early age concrete was recently built at Laval University (Canada).
The first results that have been obtained show clearly the importance of the phenomena of relaxation caused by viscous deformations, particularly during the first 24 hours.
They also show that the stress generated by the restrained shrinkage strain at 7 days varies quite significantly with the concrete composition (parameters investigated: cement type, water to binder ratio, and degree of saturation of aggregates upon mixing).
For some concretes, stresses reaching up to 40% of the ultimate tensile stress were recorded.
