Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the variation of the internal length of an enriched continua in coupled fracture problems. First the influence of the internal length on creep is investigated. In the case of creep, it is observed that the kinetics of time dependent effects in bending beams is strongly correlated with the internal length when damage occurs. The longer the internal length, the smaller the creep strains. Variation of the internal length has been considered also experimentally, by studying the influence of the material porosity, on fracture properties of mortar. The study deals with this problem on a model mortar material (mortar + polystyrene beads). Experimental investigations on this material show a decrease of the fracture energy accompanied with a variation of the internal length. This result was confirmed by acoustic emission test [1]. This variation of internal length can be interpreted as a function of the state of damage in the neighbourhood surrounding the point at which damage is computed. A prototype constitutive relation which includes this effect is presented and discussed.
