Abstract:
The experimental system of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) was set up and the EMR characteristics and rules were studied during the deformation and fracture process of concrete under the uniaxial compression. Moreover, the mechanism of EMR is analyzed. The results show that concrete can produce EMR under the uniaxial compression; the pulses number and intensity of EMR are related closely to the process of deformation and fracture. Comparing with the acoustic emission (AE) signals measured synchronously, EMR signals are more abundant and exist from the incipience of load to the fracture. Both AE and EMR signals are of correspondence, but both are not synchronous absolutely. Free electrons are produced by piezoelectricity effect, friction effect and so on. EMR mechanisms have the variable speed motion, relaxation, motion with the crack expansion of free electrons and vibration of cracks surfaces carrying electricity during the deformation and fracture process. The EMR method will provide the new means for studying the fracture mechanism and process of concrete and the EMR technique will offer a new method for forecasting unstability of concrete building.
