Abstract: 
The evaluation, strengthening and alteration of building are a newly arisen subject that is developed from the civil engineering realm in the last decade. The basic contents, meaning, present condition and development trend of the subject are systematically reviewed in this text, proving that this subject is synthetic and of high technique. It is discussed that standardization is of very importance in the engineering application of the subject.
