Abstract:
Probability-based reliability analysis for durability aspects is getting more and more attention in civil engineering in recent years. However, spatial random variability of physical quantities is seldom included in the studies, which is not very realistic. In this paper, the possibility of advanced modelling of spatial fluctuation for the structural deterioration process due to chloride-initiated corrosion of bars is analysed in detail for a hypothetical concrete beam. The probability of failure and the corroded area during the lifetime of the structure are calculated. The significance of getting an impression of spatial fluctuation effects for making inspection or repair decision are discussed as a conclusion.
