Abstract:
Since the development of high-performance concrete, a technology has been available which enables extraordinarily long service lives with due regard to the danger of rein-forcement corrosion. This paper describes a number of major buildings which have been erected in aggressive environments in recent years and which have been designed for scheduled service lives of 100 years and more. For this purpose it is important to use a concrete which possesses very high chloride penetration resistance and electrolyte resis-tance. The corro-sion behaviour in the area of cracks also requires due consideration. The installation of corrosion monitoring sensors broadens the existing scope of knowl-edge regarding durability.
