Abstract:
As a traditional composite material the reinforced concrete (R.C.) structures have been used for over one hundred fifty years. Comparing with steel structures, however, the structural theory for reinforced concrete mostly is based on the curve fitting of experimental data in some particular cases. In the present paper the author would discuss the mature criteria of a structural theory first, which should be very rigorous and unified in theory, convenience in computation, and also the related parameters can be easily determined by the traditional experimental method. Second, some very popular calculation methods in reinforced concrete structures will be revalued, such as the instability calculation of R.C. columns, the interaction of the ultimate strength of pre-stressed R.C. elements with deflections, and the failure surfaces for R.C. members under various combinations of internal forces. Finally, according to the new development of both experimental and computational techniques some suggestions on unification of concrete strength indexes are also given.
