Abstract:
Different from simply supported beams in prestressed concrete structure, continuous beams bear secondary action that results in secondary bending moment owing to excessive vertical restriction. Comparing with continuous beams, frame beams (beams in frame structure) acted by prestressing tendon sustain excessive restriction from frame columns, which offer vertical and horizontal restriction. The horizontal restriction results in extra reduction of axial compression in the frame beams, which leads to prestressing loss in the cross-section of the frame beams. The extent of the reduction is determined by horizontal stiffness of columns that connect to the frame beams directly. The exact value of the horizontal stiffness lies on entire frame structure and so the integrity analysis of the structure is necessary. Analysis and examination in engineering structures shows that the loss cannot be neglected. Based on finite element analysis, an experiential formula calculating the loss is proposed in the paper.
