Abstract:
A new rate-dependant damage constitutive model suitable for the numerical analysis of concrete structures subjected to seismic excitation is presented. The strain rate-dependant internal damage model introduced in this paper is a second-order tensor corresponding to three dimensional compressive and tensile stress states, which can capture the nonlinear behavior of concrete under seismic action, including the strain-softening response and the stiffness degradation and stiffness recovery upon load reversals and strain-rate sensitivity. The inclusion of rate sensitivity is able to reproduce the experimental observation. A strain-driven formalism is adopted to improve the algorithmic efficiency as much as required for the analysis of large-scale problems to become feasible. The non-linear seismic response of a high arch dam located in China is presented using the proposed model as an application of the proposed formulation. And the results show that the strain rates caused by seismic loading are different at various parts of the dam and have significant effects on the dynamic response of arch dams
