Abstract: The objective of the present investigation is the assessment of effectiveness of welding, performed during repair works and its effect on mechanical properties of the reinforcing steel bars.
It is also intended to provide practical design guidance.
Reinforcing steel bars falling into grades RB400 (weldable under specific conditions) and RB500W (intrinsically weldable) were examined.
It was found that when welding is performed without preheating the microstructure of the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) of RB400 steel always consists of hard and brittle phases, which affect directly the ductility of the bar.
This observation led us to investigate the effect of preheating, which provides a significant improvement of the ductility of the weld-joints.
Convenient practice allows meeting the behavior of the original bars.
In the case of the RB500W steel, although preheating is not necessary for welding, it improves however the ductility of the bars.
