Abstract: Application and benefits of rheology as a tool in evaluating the properties of fresh concrete, in particular self-compacting concrete, are briefly discussed. A coaxial cylinder viscometer can be used to evaluate the rheological properties of fresh concrete. Several examples are shown concerning shift in parameters such as increased water content, air content, silica fume content and different dispersing admixtures. Increased use of Self Compacting Concrete and other high performance concrete such as High Strength Concrete demands augmented knowledge of properties such as yield value and plastic viscosity for successful application of the product.
