Abstract: In order to increase the understanding of the influence of the different constituents on the concrete workability, rheological examination of filler modified cement paste or matrix is considered to be useful. To gain full utilisation of the matrix results there is a need to understand the relation between matrix rheology and concrete rheology. In this study the rheological properties of self-compacting concretes with a range of matrix properties and matrix volumes were investigated by the BML-viscometer and the slump flow test. Studies on the corresponding matrices were performed using a parallel plate viscometer. Supplementary investigations on the matrix rheology were performed with a concentric cylinder viscometer and a simple tube viscometer. The results indicate that the yield stress of the matrix is very important in controlling the flow properties of the concrete, while the importance of the plastic viscosity of the matrix is less obvious.
