Abstract: RMC is well known as the world's largest producer of ready mixed concrete, but it is also has many other business lines including cement, aggregates and an expanding admixture production operation. As part of its admixture business, RMC has developed an admixture that combines a welan gum viscosity-modifying agent together with polycarboxylate type superplasticisers into a single admixture. The combined admixture has a viscosity that makes it useable through admixture dispensers found at typical readymix and precast concrete production plants. A patent has been applied for the method of production (Griffin and Gibb), which is straightforward and produces an admixture that has been demonstrated to be stable (i.e. no separation of the constituent parts) for over six months.
This new admixture has overcome three previous problems:
1. The lack of a stable form of a liquid welan gum based viscosity modifier
2. The difficulty in batching small quantities of powdered welan gum
3. The limited number of admixture dispensers on most concrete plants by combining the polycarboxylate based superplasticiser and welan gum into a single, useable admixture.
The admixture can be produced with varying levels of welan gum depending on the required performance and can utilise different sources of polycarboxylic ethers. The paper describes the work that has been undertaken in developing this product and explains the production process.
