Abstract: "Testing-SCC" is an EU funded project in the "Competitive and Sustainable Growth" program. Its principal aim is "to find tests which identify the three key properties of SCC, i.e. filling ability, passing ability, and resistance to segregation, for mix design purposes in the laboratory and for compliance purposes on site". This paper presents the work carried out in Workpackage 2 of the project: "Development of mix designs and material selection", whose aims were to produce reference concretes for the assessing proposed test methods and a Quality Plan to ensure consistency of operation and comparability of results from the different laboratories participating in the project. A control mix with reproducible properties of "good" fresh SCC was designed.
To test filling ability, two mixes were designed, one with increased and one with decreased flow, but both with passing ability and segregation resistance were comparable to those of the control mix. Also, mixes with decreased passing ability and increased segregation but with flow properties as close as possible to the control mix were produced. A Quality Plan was produced to enable the partners to obtain comparable properties for the reference concretes. The results of the partners testing of the reference concretes are summarized and the explanations for possible variations are discussed.
