Abstract: Properly designed fibre concrete possesses tremendous advantages in terms of tensile strength and ductility in comparison with any conventional concrete. Self-compacting hybrid-fibre concrete is designed by application of different types of steel fibres in an optimised concrete matrix. The two main factors which determine the tensile behaviour of this concrete are, firstly the quality of bond between the fibres and the concrete, and secondly the dispersion and the orientation of the fibres in a structural element. The quality of the concrete matrix around the fibres has the largest impact on their bond. At the same time, the distribution of the fibres is related directly to the production process and to the viscosity properties of the fresh concrete mixtures. Several types of the self-compacting high performance concrete, reinforced with different types of steel fibres have been developed. In this paper, first the mix design principles and the upgrading of the "Excess Paste Model" for self-compacting fibre concrete, are shown. Subsequently, workability and basic mechanical properties are presented. The results of the three-point bending tests and the dispersion of fibres are analysed after that. Finally, the importance of the self-compactability for fibre concrete, and the possibilities for practical applications of hybrid-fibre concrete, are discussed.
