Abstract: In this study, preliminary results of a microbiological cleaning technique are proposed for restoration and conservation of concrete surfaces. This technique could offer an alternative for common chemical and mechanical cleaning methods, which often give rise to harmful effects after the application. The technique consists of the application of biological sulphur solution, i.e. a mixture of sulphur-oxidising bacteria of the genus Thiobacillus with an
appropriate nutrient. Our objective was the removal of dirt layers from materials, together with a neglectable surface layer of the material. With this technique, filth layers could be removed in a more ecological and perhaps more efficient way than with a technique such as sandblasting.
