Abstract: The TC MIB was created in September 1998 and began its activities in April 1999 in Madrid. Since it is a multidisciplinary subject which has only begun to be studied recently, the research in this area is still very fragmented. In order to take an overall view of the subject, the first task of the committee has been defined as the preparation of a state of the art report. An international workshop was organised to assist the production of this
report. Some very interesting papers were presented and useful discussion ensued, all of which will be considered when planning future activities of the Committee. The second meeting of the TC MIB members was held immediately after the workshop when almost three times as many members were present as at the first meeting. The other activities of the committee include the Research Program and the production of a database for consultation by researchers in this field.
