Abstract: It is not a novelty to recognise that publication of papers
and books has always been the main way used by
researchers for communicating their findings. However
in recent years, publications have become as well the main
measure to judge the curricula and the quality of research
work. This relatively new aspect together with the appearance
of other competing Journals has made it urgent to analyse and
strategically study RILEM policy on publications.
The creation in 1997 of RILEM Publications S.A.R.L., a
subsidiary of RILEM, was a crucial step in this direction, in
particular for increasing the visibility of the scientific work
developed under RILEM umbrella. However, new actions
are demanded to reach the goal of excellence as included in
our history and tradition. The first action was to appoint a
new Board of Editors of Materials and Structures (M&S):
H.-W. Reinhardt, J. Marchand, Å. Skarendahl and the
Chairman of the RILEM TAC (Technical Activities
Committee), A. Bentur, were elected together with S. Shah
as Editor in Chief.
The other actions were based upon the identification that
our two Journals: M&S and Concrete Science and Engineering
(CSE), provide an efficient vehicle
to RILEM members and authors
world-wide for publishing their
findings. M&S and CSE also have
a critical role in promoting
RILEM and in disseminating
state-of-the-art reports and guidelines issued by our
Technical Committees.
