Abstract: Although the slag cement concrete is already widely used in construction practice, there is still a strong request for researches on improving the use of slag in cement. Contrary to other additions, slag has latent-hydraulic property and can react without calcium hydroxide activation and its hydration products are closer to clinker one. Its reactivity can vary from one slag to another to a great extent. For a better understanding of the performance of slag in concrete and the possible improvement of its use, fundamental knowledge about its reaction and interaction with other constituents is important (Chen (2007)). So there is a need of the chemical knowledge underlying the slag reaction in cement. In this paper, the hydration of slag in blended cements was investigated through the measurement of some indicators of hydration reaction development such as portlandite, non-evaporable water and hydration heat. A multiphasic hydration model is proposed to take into account the difference of kinetic and the main interactions between clinker and slag. The model predictions are compared to experimental measurements.
