Abstract: Polycarboxylate superplasticizer with a grafted pendant group of polyethylene oxide had been developed and extensively used. However, this new superplasticizer was sensitive with temperature as dispersant, which limited its industrial application due to the difficulty in controlling of the fluidity. The chemical structure of the backbone had greatly influenced on the temperature sensitivity. So this paper presented the temperature dependence on properties of two kinds of polycarboxylate superplasticizers: polymethacrylate graft copolymer (PMAE) and polyacrylate graft copolymer (PAE). The variation in the dispersion and adsorption behavior of copolymers in the cement paste was investigated at a temperature ranging from 5 to 30oC, and the relationship between adsorption amount and dispersion was established. It was proven that the initial dispersability increased with increasing temperature but the retention of dispersability became worse at the higher temperature. Meanwhile, PMAE showed less temperature sensitivity than PAE, which was attributed to the chemical structure of the backbone. So the structure stability in temperatures was studied by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). This information will be helpful for understanding of the relationship between the structure and properties of the graft copolymer and designing the molecular structure of new functional superplasticizer.
