Abstract: In this investigation of the rheological behaviour of superplasticized cement paste, steady shear tests, creep and recovery, and stress relaxation tests were conducted, in addition to Marsh cone tests, for evaluating the relative fluidity, as well as the transition in the rheological behaviour with type and dosage of superplasticizer. It is observed that the Marsh cone flow time, mini-slump spread and the rheological model parameters show similar trends as the dosage of superplasticizer changes. Also, the saturation in the superplasticizer dosage obtained from the Marsh cone tests was found to correspond to the transition to the linearly viscous behaviour as seen in the creep and recovery, and stress relaxation test results. It is concluded that the effect of the superplasticizer on the transition in the flow behaviour can be captured adequately through rheological characterization. Moreover, the selection of the type and dosage of superplasticizer based on the relative fluidity of cement paste through simple tests, such as with the Marsh cone test, can be rationalised through the more scientific rheological characterization.
