Abstract: When concrete elements are partially subjected to sulfate environment, after a period of exposure, the upper part of concrete above the ground is deteriorated more severely than the lower part of concrete under the ground and the fly ash addition accelerates the collapse of concrete. In the paper, the sulfate concentration and pH value of squeezed pore solution in different parts of concrete partially exposed to Na2SO4 solution were analyzed. The experimental results showed that a much higher concentration pore solution is generated in the upper part of concrete than the lower part; the fly ash addition can draw more sulfates into the concrete and form a severer pore solution than normal concrete. Worse deterioration caused by stronger chemical attack occurring in severer sulfate pore solution is more likely responsible for the concrete damage.
