Abstract: The fire protection of underground infrastructures, especially of tunnel linings, has become an important criterion for the design of such structures in recent years. The topic has been triggered even more in Europe and the EU since a number of catastrophic fires in some major European tunnels in the years between 1995 and 2003. Various research programs had been established since then with the aim to find general rules for the safety and the protection of such tunnel structures during a fire event and in the phase thereafter.

The following paper discusses the demands and possible solutions for fire protection of international infrastructure tunnel projects from experience and view of an international operating construction company. The paper will focus on the applicable regulations and guidelines for the passive protection of structures and especially of tunnel final linings in European countries.
