Abstract: Mortar bars in which part of the sand was replaced by gypsum of similar size expanded more than 10% over 6.5 years as result of internal sulfate attack. The microstructure developed showed empty gaps around the sand particles. This is an experimental demonstration of: gaps created by paste expansion; and that the ettringite usually observed in such locations in mortars expanding as result of heat curing is secondary, re-crystallizing in available space.
