Abstract: Strain Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC) represents a relatively new class of building materials which exhibit pseudo-strain hardening behavior with multiple crack formation when tested under tension at quasi-static strain rates. The high ductility and strain capacity of SHCC are very exceptional for cement-based materials. They give to this material a remarked potential for applications in which high non-elastic deformability is needed.

The first RILEM Technical Committee organized with the intention of investigating this new class of material was created in 2004 and was denominated TC-208-HFC (High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete). The objective was to gather experts from all over the world to investigate the mechanical properties, durability, structural design and performance of SHCC.

In 2005 the first RILEM workshop on SHCC was held in Hawaii with the title of “International RILEM Workshop on High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCC) in Structural Applications”. During this workshop, 61 papers were presented, lumped together in the conference proceedings showing the international state-ofthe-art on SHCC which helped to define the future research needs towards implementation of SHCC in Building Codes and in structural applications.

More recently, in 2010, a new RILEM Technical Committee originated from the durability subcommittee of the TC-208-HFC. This new TC has been denominated as “A Framework for Durability Design of Fibre-Reinforced Strain-Hardening Cement-Based Composites (SHCC)”, or short TC-FDS. Following the activities of the TC-HFC and the initial works of the TC-FDS it was decided to organize the 2nd International RILEM Conference on Strain Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC2-Rio) on 12-14 December 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This Conference closes the activities of the RILEM TC 208-HFC and shows the ongoing activities of the RILEM TC-FDS. The Conference covers most aspects related to SHCC Materials (including Textile Reinforced Concrete). A total of 49 peer reviewed papers were published in the proceedings, resulting in 31 invited talks and 18 contributed talks. The conference addresses the following subjects that are closely related to the closing activities of the RILEM TC HFC and to the ongoing activities of the RILEM TC FDS:

• Test methods for mechanical characterization
• Structural design and performance
• Durability characterization and design
• Theoretical considerations and computational methods
• Practical Applications

Finally, the organizing committee would like to express their most sincere gratitude to the sponsors, for their financial support, to the students and secretariat that devoted their time for helping in the conference organization and to all authors, who submitted high quality technical papers within the scope of the SHCC2-Rio conference.
