Abstract: In repair layers on cracked concrete surfaces, crack opening displacements in the substrate may lead locally to stress concentrations and cracking. Layers made of strain hardening cement-based composites (SHCC), however, appear to be comparatively resistant to this type of loading. This may be attributed to the high deformability of these materials due to multiple cracking. The durability of cracked SHCC repair layers depends on their water permeability and the latter is strongly influenced by the existing crack pattern. An evaluation method for crack patterns is proposed which considers both the crack width distribution and the crack density. The results of the crack width evaluation are compared to those of permeability measurements at cracked SHCC specimens. The objective of the presented study is to estimate the water permeability of cracked SHCC repair layers on the basis of observed crack patterns.
