Abstract: To optimize the strain-hardening characteristic of SHCC, multiple cracks are expected to form subsequently and orthogonal to any given principal stress direction. However, this condition may not prevail when there is limited stress transfer along the existing multiple cracks, for instance, due to limited shear transfer. This paper provides a first attempt to improve the shear transfer property of SHCC by adding coarse aggregate. Specifically, this paper describes the effects of various aggregate amounts on the strength and ductility of plates made of SHCC with and without coarse aggregate and focuses on the plate cracking behaviour under rotating principal stress axis. It was found that a proper amount of aggregate works robustly with pre-cracking. The improvement in shear was found to stabilize the post-cracking response and to control the orientation of secondary cracks from somewhat orthogonal to the pre-cracks to nearly orthogonal to the new principal stress direction.
