Abstract: The paper shows in relation to very simple structures, as the prediction of the maximum bearing capacity of redundant structures cannot use the characteristic values computable by means of material characterization on notched specimens, especially when the standard deviation is very high, as often it occurs for FRC residual tensile strengths. A coefficient able to take into account the reduced variability of the mechanical strength when associated to a large volume involved in the failure process, which is proportional to the total fibre number activated, as well as the capability of the structure to redistribute stresses favouring the average strength rather than the minimum one, is here discussed.
