Abstract: The new European Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/CE that must be fully implemented by all Member States on December 2010, sets a recycling target of 70% for construction and demolition waste (CDW) by the year 2020. To achieve this objective it is fundamental to disseminate the actual knowledge regarding the use of this waste flow and look for new alternatives.

Research carried on up to now regards mainly the coarse fraction of CDW but the fine fraction cannot be simply discarded because it accounts for 20% to 50% of this waste stream. In this paper a review of production processes, characteristics, technical specifications and applications of the fine fraction as aggregates in building materials is presented.
