Abstract: The concepts of “durability” and “service-life” are extended to include the deterioration of the protective system against various environmental actions. Examples are given on transport processes that are decisive for a large number of deterioration mechanisms. Transport paths in the microstructure of concrete are discussed and compared to the ones in paste. The mechanisms of moisture and ion transport are connected to the microstructure and examples are given where the true transport mechanisms must be better understood.
