Abstract: This paper describes the microstructural study of slag and silica fume concretes subjected to short term heat curing. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of the microstructure was performed using backscatter electron imaging and image analysis. Significant differences were observed in the composition of the inner C-S-H as well as in the distribution of sulphate and aluminate in the outer C-S-H for the concretes with slag and silica fume as compared to plain OPC. Further, the degree of hydration measured using image analysis was substantially different. The study also explored the role of the initial pre-heating delay period on the microstructure of the heat cured concretes.
