Abstract: This paper introduces a new in-situ monitoring method of initial setting of concrete based on pore water under pressure (PWP)measurement. Experimental results in the lab demonstrates that there is a highly coincidence between PWP development and penetration resistance development. Such kind of coincidence is totally independent with the temperature variation. Moreover, there is no difference between the PWP development of concrete and that of the mortar taken out from the concrete. Experimental results provide a sound base for the determination of initial setting time based on PWP measurement. Through the transforming from penetration resistance measurement into PWP measurement it is successfully to realize in-situ monitoring of concrete setting for a real building structure continuously, automatically and remotely.
