Abstract:
One of the common methods for improvement in mechanical and durability properties of concrete is use of pozzolanic admixtures as a partial replacement for cement. Pozzolan is a silica or silica-alumina material which reacts with cement and makes more cementitious material. In this study, four mix designs were prepared using silica fume, natural zeolite, and metakaolin in comparison to the control mix. Several mechanical and durability tests such as compressive strength, water absorption, water penetration depth, oxygen permeability, electrical resistivity and acid resistance were performed on concrete specimens. According to the results, in most cases, specimens containing pozzolanic admixtures performed better than control specimens. In addition, the effectiveness of silica fume was more considerable comparing to other admixtures.
