Abstract:
Special type of internal sulfate attack is heat-induced attack or so called delayed ettringite formation (DEF). DEF is still an open question, in particular the exact mechanism of the expansion. In this paper some aspects of the mechanisms so far proposed of concrete expansion associated with the formation of delayed ettringite (DE) will be presented. Formation of DE in relation with expansive behaviour of cement-based materials will be discussed. Also, necessary prerequisites for occurrence of DEF, such as high temperature in concrete and alkali leaching, together with possible causes of the (re)crystallization of ettringite will be emphasized. Apart from the exact mechanism of expansion, some of the important factors are heat curing, type of aggregate, properties of cement and microcracks. These parameters will be discussed in this review paper. Possibility of special type of DEF in concrete which was not cured at elevated temperature will also be briefly discussed. At the end, some microstructural/microchemical observations will be given.
