Abstract: Sulphate attack is one of the primary durability issues affecting the performance of concrete in service. Sulphates from groundwater and seawater penetrate into concrete and react with the hydrated cement paste phases, leading to the production of secondary phases such as gypsum and ettringite, and consequently to the loss of the cementing efficiency of the CSH. Although the subject of sulphate attack and the protection of concrete structures in sulphate rich environments is well understood, engineering design for concrete in such environments can be tricky, because of a number of complications. These issues are addressed in this article.
