Abstract: Very high strength cementitious composites are known to be very brittle and fiber reinforcement is often proposed as a solution to increase their ductility. In the current study, very high strength cementitious composites with extremely high ductility were developed, using up to 9% steel fibers (by volume) while maintaining a workable mix. Three types of fiber were used, either alone or in a hybrid form: Macro-size fiber: high strength hooked ends (l=30 mm), Meso-size fiber: high strength straight (l=6 mm), and Micro-size fiber: high strength - 25µm thick flat fibers (l=5 and 15 mm). High flexural strength of about 40 MPa was achieved in most of the composites, combined with enhanced ductility and strain hardening behavior. When only micro-size fibers were used the strain hardening behavior was limited and soon after attaining the peak load, a drop in load occurred. Hybrid reinforcement combining macro with meso-size fibers, at a total volume of ~6%, yielded approximately the same flexural strength but with improved ductility in the post-peak zone. It appears that hybridization of different types of fibers, with each one contributing at a different level of strain and crack opening can optimize the properties of the composite.
