“UHPFRC 2009” international symposium was organized in Marseillen (France) under the auspices of fib (international federation of structural concrete) and AFGC, the French Association for Civil Engineering. In addition to traditional academic aspects of R & D that are found in conferences dedicated to similar cementitious composite materials it has contributed to the synthesis of the know-how concerning design and building of actual structures made of Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). More than 320 attendees with varied professional roles appreciated the scientific and technical exchange. Four years later, projects and constructions using UHPFRC have definitively gained a growing importance in Europe as well as in North America, Australia and Far East, especially Japan and China.
“UHPFRC 2013”, the 2nd international symposium on UHPFRC, co-organized by AFGC, fib and RILEM (The International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials), has aimed at updating and complementing this experience gained in the knowledge and increasing use of UHPFRC, based on recent applied research and practice of:
• design of building structures, components, civil engineering works and bridges,
• industrial applications (both on site and in precast factories),
• and many large-scale constructions.
Most recent building and ongoing design operations have deserved presentations during the symposium, either in civil engineering, buildings, or consisting of structural equipments, components and civil infrastructures, both in the fields of new construction and retrofitting. Technical improved skill, scientific knowledge and experience of construction management has been collected and shared, in terms of structural design and analysis, safety justification, execution reliability, achieved performance and durability. Significant presentations have been dedicated to structural retrofitting using UHPFRC, composite regular concrete-UHPFRC elements, fire resistance. In parallel with elaboration or updating of national guidelines concerning UHPFRC, clarification of the material characterization and structural (shear, punching shear and flexural) design of (possibly conventionally reinforced) UHPFRC elements have also deserved numerous efforts.
The ambition of these Proceedings, as part of the RILEM collection, is to constitute a new milestone and reference source of technical and scientific knowledge for all people involved in UHPFRC application whether in research, design, building art or practice.
We have been proud and honoured to collect and highlight the high-quality information provided by numerous researchers, architects, design engineers, technical managers, namely colleagues from more than a dozen of countries. We sincerely thank the many reviewers of the scientific committee who tried to ensure giving these proceedings a significant archival value, and the members of organizing, supporting and international advisory committees, for their great contribution towards a successful UHPFRC 2013.
