Abstract:
The role of the built environment for a sustainable development is of paramount importance in all countries. In a highly developed country such as Switzerland, the main challenges are posed by the renewal of the existing infrastructure and the building stock. The latter is a key factor for both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. An integrated approach incorporating new materials, systems engineering and urban physics can lead to new and innovative solutions for the built environment. Thanks to these new developments it will be possible to operate the building stock purely on renewable energies, which will lead to a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the buildings will be more comfortable and more cost efficient.
