Abstract:
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, thirty-two prestressed concrete water tanks in the San Francisco Bay Area were repaired and seismically retrofitted to meet current standards. The prestressed concrete water tanks retrofitted were constructed between 1935 and 1965 using techniques common at that time. Prestressed concrete tanks using this same system were also constructed in other parts of the world, including South Africa and Zambia. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the local water agency considered the costs of replacement against the cost of repair and retrofitting their old prestressed concrete water tanks. Repair and retrofitting was selected. The methods of analysis and the favorable results are a model to other water agencies with similar prestressed concrete water tanks.
