Abstract:
A relatively large numbers of existing bridges in central Europe are supported by hollow box columns that comprise substandard construction details, which are inappropriate for the seismic regions. The presented experimental and analytical studies indicated that the insufficient shear strength was the most critical deficiency of the short columns of this type. Therefore, two types of their shear strengthening, RC jacketing and CFRP wrapping were analyzed and compared. The minimum amount of jacketing efficiently increased their shear strength. When the shear failure was prevented the other unfavorable failure types, induced by other construction deficiencies were activated. The disagreement between different available methodologies to estimate the shear strength and cyclic response of as-built and strengthened columns was considerable. The most efficient analytical procedures were identified.
