Abstract: Only few years after opening to the traffic a motorway showed a growing number of cracks in the wearing course. The investigations into the possible reasons for the crack formation gave indications that the quality of the aggregates has had an important influence on the change in asphalt quality leading to the formation of cracks in the surface layer. The laboratory investigations into the quality of the aggregates and a comparison with a well known reference material and the possible interactions with a polymer modified bituminous binder and the findings are presented and discussed.
